Contribution of effort, self-efficacy, and reflection in self-regulated learning among Indonesian National Team U19 football players

The development of self-regulated learning (SRL) is a critical factor in the growth and performance of elite youth athletes, including members of the Indonesian National Team U19 football squad. SRL refers to an athlete’s ability to actively manage their own learning process, set goals, monitor progress, and adjust strategies to achieve optimal performance. Among the key components that contribute to effective SRL are effort, self-efficacy, and reflection, each playing a distinct and complementary role in shaping a player's capacity to learn and improve within a highly competitive environment.


Effort is the foundation of SRL, representing the persistence, energy, and determination that players invest in their training and development. U19 national team players who consistently exert high levels of effort are more likely to engage deeply with training programs, seek additional practice opportunities, and prepare meticulously for both practices and matches. Research shows that regulation of effort is a strong predictor of advancement to elite levels; players with higher effort scores are significantly more likely to be selected for top academy teams compared to those with lower effort. This willingness to push personal limits is essential for maintaining the intensive practice required to excel at the national and international levels.


Self-efficacy, or the belief in one’s ability to succeed in specific tasks, is another vital contributor to SRL among young footballers. Players who possess strong self-efficacy approach challenges with confidence, set ambitious goals, and remain resilient in the face of setbacks. In the context of the Indonesian U19 team, high self-efficacy enables athletes to tackle demanding training regimens and competitive pressures with a positive mindset. Studies indicate that self-efficacy not only enhances motivation but also influences the quality of practice, as players who believe in their capabilities are more likely to persist through difficulties and adapt their strategies to overcome obstacles.


Reflection is the metacognitive process through which players analyze their performance, identify strengths and weaknesses, and formulate plans for future improvement. Among Indonesian U19 footballers, reflection is a distinguishing factor between those who achieve higher levels of performance and those who do not. Elite players regularly engage in cycles of self-evaluation, learning from both successes and failures, and using these insights to refine their approach to training and competition. Research highlights that reflection is not only associated with better learning outcomes but also predicts progression to higher competitive levels, underscoring its importance in talent development.


In summary, the interplay of effort, self-efficacy, and reflection forms the backbone of self-regulated learning among Indonesian National Team U19 football players. These psychological and behavioral factors enable athletes to take ownership of their development, maximize the benefits of coaching, and sustain high levels of motivation and performance. For coaches and sports psychologists, fostering these SRL components through targeted interventions and supportive environments can significantly enhance the growth trajectory of young football talent in Indonesia.
